We're heading into Pride Season, that time of year when rainbows start popping up in corporate ads. While the initial impulse might be to get excited about it, it is important to remember that Pride began as a protest. Corporations aren't trying to hear that. The vast majority of the time, these corporations are just marketing. Many of them do not actively do anything for the LGBTQ+ community. The money goes right back into the pockets of a CEO who will forgot about us until it's time for the next Pride event. It's how they make money off of us. They see us as dollar signs, as walking wallets.
Instead of helping them buy more vacation homes or sports car, consider supporting those businesses owned and run by members of the LGBTQ+ community. Your money will go directly to supporting their families, their art, and make them excited to do what they're doing. And who doesn't want to be a part of that? Buy items from ally-owned shops that donate portions of their profits (either in whole or from specific items) to the community.
Do your research before you start snatching up those "Love is Love" tees or rainbow sunglasses. What does that company do with that money you're giving them? What do they do with it all year?
When you buy from my shop, that money helps sustain us. It helps to keep the lights on, buy our prescriptions, and pay the rent. You help keep this queer-owned shop going! Thank you!
Below are other small businesses owned by members of the community. Check them out! Show your support! If you are a member of the community, or even an ally-owned shop, and want to be added to the list, please send me an email to email@example.com with your Instagram/Etsy/website.
